If you want to view your own health records, you may not need to make a formal application. Nothing in the law prevents healthcare professionals from informally showing you your own records. You can make an informal request during a consultation, by contacting the practice by phone or in writing.
A health record contains information about your physical and mental health recorded by a healthcare professional as part of your care.
If you want to see your health records, you don’t have to give a reason.
The GP, practice manager or other healthcare professional employed by us and bound by confidentiality will have to read each and every line in your notes after you make a request for copy of your notes as you are not entitled to any third party information – information that relates to another person.
Under the Data Protection Act 2018, requests for access to records should be met within 30 days.
Can someone else access my health records?
Another person (including your relative) can only access your health records if you authorise them to do so.
